Trichy: Police have begun installing green sunshade nets near traffic signals across the city as the temperature begins to shoot up for the past few days. The nets provide temporary relief to bike riders who feel discomfort due to extreme heat while waiting at signals.
In previous years, such nets were set up at locations including Puthur Four Road, the head post office, Palpannai and TVS Tollgate. This year, the police plan to expand coverage to additional spots, including near Panjapur.
"We have just started the installation and will add more places depending on fund availability and CSR support. The nets will remain in place for three to four months," police commissioner N Kamini told TOI.
The mercury levels continue to rise with the city recording 38°C or higher in the past few days. Intense heat increases risks of dehydration, fatigue, and heat-related discomfort among commuters during peak traffic hours. Beyond providing immediate relief from heat, the green nets encourage better adherence to traffic rules.
Commuters have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a small yet meaningful improvement that enhances commuters' safety.
K Murali, a rider from Thillai Nagar, said, "Such nets should be installed at all traffic signals on both sides of the road across the city. They will make travel safer and more bearable through the bustling roads."
